Second only to New York as a US banking center, Charlotte carries Bank of America's and Truist's headquarters (the NCNB/First Union roots that built "Wall Street of the South") alongside a genuinely emerging battery and EV-materials cluster -- lithium recycling (Li Industries), battery separator manufacturing (Green New Energy Materials), and EV fast-charging hardware (Alpitronic's US headquarters). The region is also nicknamed "Race City USA": while NASCAR's own corporate headquarters sits in Daytona Beach, the vast majority of its teams' race shops -- Hendrick Motorsports, Team Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing, Richard Childress Racing -- are physically based here, making Charlotte the sport's real operational center of gravity even though its sanctioning body isn't headquartered here.
