Start with the tenant the garage-startup story leaves out. In 1951, Stanford engineering dean Frederick Terman built Stanford Industrial Park, leasing university land directly to technology companies so Stanford graduates would stay local instead of moving east.[1] Hewlett-Packard was an early tenant, and so was Lockheed Corporation -- listed in the same sentence as HP in the park's own founding history, not a separate later chapter.[1] Terman himself had spent World War II doing military radar countermeasures research before returning to Stanford as dean.[1] The man credited as the father of Silicon Valley built its first real-estate anchor around a defense contractor from day one.
That defense contractor became the region's largest employer, and it wasn't close. Lockheed Missiles and Space Company moved into Sunnyvale in 1957 to design and build the Polaris and Trident submarine-launched ballistic missiles.[2] By 1959 it employed nearly 20,000 people across Palo Alto and Sunnyvale; by the mid-1960s that had grown to 30,000, and Lockheed remained Santa Clara County's largest employer for decades -- before the personal computer industry ever took over that title.[2] Its 8-million-square-foot Sunnyvale complex, 137 buildings on 275 acres bought when Sunnyvale's entire population was still under 10,000, was the largest corporate real estate footprint in Silicon Valley until the 1990s.[2] Lockheed didn't move into Silicon Valley. It built a meaningful share of the physical infrastructure the rest of Silicon Valley later occupied.
The lab that invented the personal-computing interface was the same lab that helped build the internet. SRI International was founded by Stanford's own trustees in 1946.[3] Its Augmentation Research Center, led by Douglas Engelbart from 1959, unveiled the computer mouse, the graphical interface, hypertext linking, and real-time collaborative editing in a single 90-minute December 1968 presentation that became known as the Mother of All Demos -- work funded through DARPA and NASA, not venture capital.[3] The following year, that same institution became the second node of ARPANET, right after UCLA.[3] Personal computing's defining interface and the internet's own infrastructure came out of the identical federally funded building.
The commercial internet's own backbone repeated the exact same pairing, twenty-five years later. MAE-East, the first non-governmental internet exchange point in the country, went live in 1992, its central nexus eventually settling into the underground parking garage of an office building in Vienna, Virginia -- inside the DMV.[4] Its direct West Coast counterpart, MAE-West, came online in November 1994 in San Jose, California, at the height of its use handling as much as 40% of the nation's entire internet traffic.[4] MAE-East's own lineage runs even further: its later move to Loudoun County is the direct, traceable origin of Ashburn's present-day status as the world's largest concentration of data centers.[4] The same two regions that split the founding defense contracts split the founding internet exchange points too -- not a metaphor, the literal physical wiring closets where the commercial internet first connected to itself.
Even the geographic center of the Valley started as a military installation. Moffett Field was commissioned in 1933 as a naval air station, home to the Navy airship USS Macon, and cycled between the Navy and Army Air Corps through the 1930s and into World War II before NASA's predecessor agency built Ames Aeronautical Laboratory on the adjoining land.[5] The Navy's own airfield sat directly at the geographic heart of what became Silicon Valley for six decades, until a 1994 base closure finally transferred the whole site to NASA Ames.[5]
And the descendants are still choosing the Valley for the same reason, on this site's own graph. Vannevar Labs -- named for the wartime science advisor who proposed what became DARPA -- builds AI intelligence-analysis tools for the IC and DOD out of Palo Alto. Array Labs builds formation-flying radar satellites for real-time imagery. The Defense Innovation Unit, the Pentagon's own bridge to commercial technology, operates directly out of the Valley it once helped seed through Lockheed and SRI. What the graph doesn't hold yet is the institutions where all of it actually started -- Lockheed Missiles and Space, SRI International, and NASA Ames don't have their own rows. The garage-startup version of this story is the one that got written down. The missile plant's version is the one that built the ground it stands on.
