Nebraska has spent more than fifty years building the infrastructure for exactly this moment: a state that produces enormous amounts of food deciding to also build the technology that farms it. The University of Nebraska's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources was chartered by state law in 1973, specifically to formalize agriculture as a research priority. Its own tech-transfer arm, NUtech Ventures, has been licensing university inventions to startups since 2009. A dedicated agtech accelerator, The Combine, opened at Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln in 2019, backed by the state's own economic development agency and, within a year, a $600,000 federal Build to Scale grant.[1][2][3] In 2020, students in the University of Nebraska's College of Business launched the Husker Venture Fund, a small, donor-funded, student-run vehicle that writes $20,000 to $25,000 checks into Nebraska-connected startups.[4]
That infrastructure has produced real companies. Jackson Stansell built Sentinel Fertigation while finishing a master's degree in agricultural engineering at UNL, software that tells farmers exactly when their crops need nitrogen instead of applying it on a calendar. It was the Husker Venture Fund's first-ever investment in 2022, closed a $1.2 million seed round the same year with Invest Nebraska and a handful of Nebraska angel investors, and won back-to-back national engineering innovation awards in 2025 and 2026.[4][5] Grain Weevil, built by a father-son team after a Nebraska farmer asked them to design something so he'd never have to climb into a grain bin again, makes a small robot that levels grain and breaks crusts inside bins — a job that kills people almost every year. By early 2026 it had four U.S. patents granted, 21 more pending, roughly 50 robots already working in the field and another 100 on order, backed by Invest Nebraska seed money and over a million dollars in federal SBIR grants.[5][6] A state-built map of the ecosystem counted roughly 45 agtech startups and 60 supporting organizations as of May 2026.[7]
None of that infrastructure has translated into the capital the state's own agricultural scale would predict. A 2026 University of Nebraska-Lincoln study benchmarked agtech venture investment against farm-sector output across eight Midwest states. Nebraska raised $76 million in agtech venture capital between 2021 and 2025, against a regression-modeled expectation of $121.1 million given the size of its agricultural economy — a documented gap of $45.1 million, and the third-lowest capital-capture ratio of the eight states studied, trailing North Dakota and Missouri by a wide margin.[8] The study's own framing, echoed in trade coverage: agtech success is built, not inherited — strong farmland and research funding don't automatically convert into venture outcomes.[9]
A separate piece on the state's own AgTech Innovation Map, published the same month, put it more plainly in its own headline: the ecosystem is "getting stronger despite few exits." The project's founder, Ankit Chandra, described the state's position without triumph: "We are getting there — learning to innovate."[7]
The state's actual venture-capital headline number makes the gap sharper, not smaller. Nebraska companies raised a record $527.9 million in 2025, a real jump from $77.4 million the year before. But roughly 80 percent of that total came from a single deal: CompanyCam, a Lincoln-based construction-photo-documentation company, closed a $415 million round in August 2025 to become the state's first unicorn, at a $2 billion valuation.[10][11] CompanyCam has nothing to do with agriculture. Strip its round out of the 2025 total, and the other 65 deals — agtech included — raised roughly $113 million combined. The state's first real venture-scale outcome came from a sector nobody built fifty years of institutional infrastructure for.
The macro case for the infrastructure hasn't gone away. American farms face a labor gap estimated at 2.4 million workers a year, and the market for robotics and AI applied directly to agriculture — autonomous equipment, precision input timing, remote herd monitoring, the exact categories Sentinel Fertigation and Grain Weevil sit in — was sized at roughly $401 million globally in 2025 and is projected to reach $5.48 billion by 2035.[12] Nebraska built the university research base, the licensing office, the accelerator, and the seed fund years before that demand curve turned real. Whether any of it converts into the state's next actual outcome, rather than its most recent documented shortfall, is still an open question — one the state's own researchers are now tracking with a number attached, instead of assuming the infrastructure would eventually speak for itself.
