Investigating the Overlooked
Three different questions get tangled together whenever this comes up, and they deserve separate answers: when did Africans first set foot in the Americas, when did that become a mass, forced migration, and — the part that actually connects back to why this came up at all — what does a person's own DNA still carry that the written record simply doesn't. Worth being clear-eyed about a fourth claim too, since it circulates constantly and isn't well supported: whether Africans reached the Americas before Columbus at all.
The version of this story that circulates most widely says Africans reached the Americas centuries before Columbus — usually pointing to the Olmec colossal stone heads in Mexico (said to show African facial features) or to a supposed 1311 transatlantic voyage by a Malian ruler, often named "Mansa Abu Bakr II." Neither holds up under scrutiny.[4] No Mansa by that name is confirmed to have actually reigned in Mali; the voyage story survives only as an oral account relayed decades later through Mansa Musa, with no independent Malian record or outside corroboration. The Olmec-heads theory traces to a single 1970s book and has been rejected by the archaeologists and Mesoamerican specialists who've actually examined the evidence — no genuine African artifact has ever turned up in a controlled excavation anywhere in the pre-Columbian Americas.
None of that makes the underlying hope foolish — wanting a deeper, earlier presence than the one the record actually gives you is a completely understandable thing to want. But the honest version of this story doesn't need the myth. What's actually documented is still real, still early, and still worth knowing precisely.
Juan Garrido is the earliest documented African in what's now the United States.[1] Born free around 1487 in the Kingdom of Kongo, he made his way to Lisbon, crossed to the Caribbean, and by 1513 was exploring present-day Florida alongside Juan Ponce de León — a free man, a conquistador in his own right, later prospecting for gold across Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Mexico under his own name.
Estevanico followed a harder road to the same continent: enslaved and sold to a Spanish nobleman around 1522, he became part of the Narváez expedition into Spanish Florida starting in 1528, and is generally credited as the first person of African and Arab descent to explore the present-day American Southwest.[2]
Both men were part of a wider group historians call Ladinos — Hispanicized Africans, some free and some enslaved, fluent in Spanish and familiar with European commercial and legal custom, who worked across the earliest Spanish colonial world as translators, soldiers, and go-betweens. They were in the Americas roughly a century before the slave trade became the industrial, plantation-scale system most people picture when they hear the phrase.
Between Garrido's Florida in 1513 and the mass forced migration most people picture, roughly 12.5 million Africans were put on ships bound for the Americas between 1525 and 1866, of whom about 10.7 million survived the crossing.[3] That's the documented record, and it's the demographic fact underneath almost everything else in this history. But it's not where this gets most interesting. What gets interesting is what a person's own blood can still tell you, generations later, that no ship's manifest or parish record ever recorded in the first place.
In February 1951, Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman being treated for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, had cells taken from her tumor during a biopsy — standard practice at the time, and taken without her knowledge or consent, which was also standard practice at the time.[5] Those cells, cultured in a lab as "HeLa," turned out to do something no human cells had ever done before: they kept dividing indefinitely outside the body, the first human cell line that wouldn't just die off after a few generations in a dish.
HeLa cells became the foundational tool of modern biology. They were used to develop the polio vaccine, to study the effects of radiation and spaceflight on human cells, in early cancer and HIV research, and later in COVID-19 vaccine development — billions of HeLa cells have been grown and shipped to labs worldwide since 1951. Henrietta Lacks died that October, at 31. Her family didn't learn her cells were still alive, still being bought and sold by biotech and pharmaceutical companies, until more than twenty years later — and didn't see any compensation for it until a 2023 settlement with Thermo Fisher Scientific, seventy-two years after the fact.
Why this belongs next to a DNA test, not just a cancer story. The genetic-sequencing technology that later read Albert Perry's Y-chromosome — the labs, the cell-culture techniques, decades of accumulated genomic method — was built in no small part on the back of HeLa cells. One Black woman's biology, taken without being asked, became part of the infrastructure that decades later let another Black family's biology, offered voluntarily and out of plain curiosity, tell them something true about where they actually come from. Same category of material. Almost opposite stories about consent.
This is the part that ties back to why this came up in the first place. In 2012, the great-grandson of a South Carolina man named Albert Perry, born into slavery, sent in a Y-chromosome DNA test through a genealogy company — curiosity, not research. The result didn't fit anywhere on the known human Y-chromosome tree. It was so different from every other branch that it defined an entirely new one, since named haplogroup A00 — sitting at the very root of the tree, more ancestral than any lineage known before it.[6]
What made it more than a curiosity. It wasn't an isolated fluke. Later research found the same lineage still living among the Mbo people of western Cameroon — confirming Perry's mutation as a real, still-existing population branch, not a one-off anomaly in one family's sample. The original study estimated this pushed back the age of the most recent common ancestor of every living human Y-chromosome to roughly 338,000 years — far older than the ~140,000–200,000 year estimate that had stood before it, though a later paper argued the true number is closer to 208,000 years, and the two teams are still debating the exact figure.[7] What both sides agree on: A00 is real, it's the deepest known branch of the human Y-chromosome tree, and one family's curiosity about their own history is what surfaced it.
A single test, taken by a family with no reason to expect anything but a name and a percentage, ended up reaching further back than any documentary record ever could — past Garrido, past the Middle Passage, past every written source this whole history depends on. No ship's manifest, no parish register, no plantation ledger goes back 338,000 years, or even close. Blood does. It was sitting there the whole time, in a living population in Cameroon and in a family in South Carolina, waiting on nothing but the curiosity to go look.
